The Lucerne Festival Orchestra

Abbado made his debut in 1960 at the Scala in Milan (it). 1966, he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic for the first time, and with this orchestra he was engaged in Lucerne, too. In 1986 he founded the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, the unique pan-European youth orchestra.

From 2003 Abbado will be engaged with the new Lucerne Festival Orchestra, created by Arturo Toscanini before the second war. The formation will include principal players of the Berlin Philharmonic and soloists of international renown: the Sabine Meyer Ensemble, the Hagen Quartet and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Abbado will be conducting his first concerts with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra by August 14, 2003.

Das Lucerne Festival Orchestra

Claudio Abbado hat 2003 das neu gegründete Lucerne Festival Orchestra übernommen. Der Intendant der Internationalen Musikfestwochen, Michael Haefliger, will mit der Neugründung, die Abbado vorangetrieben hat, an die grosse Tradition des Schweizerischen Festspielorchesters anknüpfen. Abbado ist seit 1966 mit dem SFO regelmässiger Gast in Luzern. Das neue Orchester wird aus Mitgliedern des Gustav Mahler Chamber Orchestra und Schweizer Musikern gebildet. Hinzu kommen ehemalige Philharmoniker wie Emmanuel Pahud, Kolja Blacher, Rainer Kussmaul oder Wolfram Christ. Auch Solisten wie das Hagen-Quartett und die Klarinettistin Sabine Meyer werden sich in das Orchester einreihen.
